CMS grant offers to guide small practices with MACRA

If you are part of a small physician practice, with 15 or fewer clinicians, and/or are located in a rural location, a health professional shortage area, or in a medically underserved area, your practice may qualify for help with the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) reporting.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is awarding $20 million per year over the next five years to fund on-the-ground training and education for Medicare clinicians in individual or small-group practices. The direct technical assistance is available immediately; free to all Quality Payment Program (QPP) eligible clinicians, including physicians (MD/DO and DMD/DDS), podiatrists, optometrists, chiropractors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and certified registered nurse anesthetists; and will deliver support for up to a five-year period.

The receive a grant, organizations must demonstrate their ability to provide customized training at no cost to the small physician practice this year and beyond. The enrollment window is open now.

The assistance with quality improvement will prepare any small practices to:

  • Select and report on appropriate measures and activities to satisfy the requirements of each performance category (quality, cost, improvement activities, and advancing care information) under MIPS
  • Engage in continuous quality improvement
  • Optimize their health information technology (HIT)
  • Evaluate their options for joining an Advanced Alternative Payment Model (APM)

Small practices will receive guidance on what they need to consider to be successful under the QPP, such as what quality measures and/or electronic health record (EHR) may be appropriate for their practices’ needs. Organizations are also training clinicians about the new clinical practice improvement activities and how these new activities could fit into their practices’ workflow, or help practices evaluate their options for joining an APM.

Below is a list of the participating organizations, by geography, that will be available to help small practices with the QPP:
